PRESS RELEASE

THINKNOT is a collection of rugs designed by four renowned contemporary artists - Tony Bevan, Gary Hume RA, Sarah Morris, Gavin Turk and the celebrated product designer - Michael Sodeau. Each artist has contributed an individual design derived from original works and the resulting collection is unique and very representational in content. The show has been in development for many months as Christopher Farr has worked closely with the artists to achieve their exacting colour and textural requirements.

Ten years ago, to describe and artist¹s work as decorative was not only offensive but implied that the work lacked intellectual content. The climate has evolved to a point where artists are now far more at ease working in new mediums, allowing them to explore ideas from a new perspective. Critics and art institutions however, have been slower to catch on yet the public appear more willing to embrace diversification from established artists into territory that was previously the sole provenance of applied artists and crafts people.

Textiles, until recently, have been the Cinderella of the art world. Yet textile history of the last century includes rugs designed by such luminaries as Picasso and Ellsworth Kelly, there is even a Francis Bacon rug in the textile collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The exhibition Thinknot, promises to make an important contribution to the exciting new and open environment that exists today.
